Adult Content & E for Everyone to close for comfort?

Posted at

Is anyone else worried that having adult comics next to an E for Everyone comic is hurting your comic? I know I've gotten some feedback that people like my comic but don't want their kids on because there is to much hard adult content. I think it is fair to say to right now you can't search & browse the comic list to far without running into some rather expliced content avatars. I know my cousins aren't allowed to read my comic for this very fact. I'm not sure if this is true or not but I've heard some software like Net-Nanny even blocks Drunk Duck all together keeping some kids off the site.

If you do think so, do you think the reverse is true and that adult comics are hurt be being so close to comics aimed at children?

I ask not just because of DD (though I certainly think it is far question here) but also because I was planning on hosting two podcasts together one E for Everyone (Atom-a-Rama) & one M for Mature (The Lee McVain Show) to save money on hosting however I would post them seperately on DD. Despite this I'm worried that might be a bad idea as it would be all that hard for a kid to download the M rated Lee McVain Show after following a link from my E for everyone Atom-a-Rama.

Opinions?

Actually, at least the way I understand it, a comics you need an account Adult comics but not to view but M ones. DD just don't show the avatars for M comics unless you are logged in.

Of course most kids can make an account and say they are over 18 if they want to. I know most of my aunt and uncles couldn't even do that without their kids help. :P

However I'm not really asking about censorship, I mean I know parents who won't let their kids go into stored with dirty magazines even if the covers are blacked out, so I have to think some parents do the same thing online. I'm just asking if you think one hurts the other since I'm hosting my pod cast off DD which doesn't have any such restrictions.

Edit: I mean obviously some parents are going to freak over everything but do you think that it really make a difference? IE: Would you see say 10% more hits a day if suddenly all A or E comics were gone or do you think no one really cares enough to make a difference.

I'm hoping that someday, DD lets us filter our searches (or the whole site with a set cookie or something) using ratings. Sometimes – most of the time, I just don't want to be bombarded by naked people and people "doin' it" when I'm browsing comics.

(And I'm sure people looking specifically for DD pron would appreciate not having to sift through the kiddie stuff. :o )

Gawd… I have people thinking my comic is adult… o_O
I've seen raunchier stuff in Pokemon, seriously. I have. Just the normal TV edit.
Same with Sailor Moon.

Heh. But as for real raunchy porno stuff, I don't think it hurts your comics either way, A or E. For every person put off there'll be someone else who isn't. The only content that used to hurt other comics were the spriters, but only by reputation and perception; ie. they were quite visible and some shallow people assumed that was all the site was and so avoided it because of that.

That said, it'd be nice to have an alert box that you have to click OK for each time you click on an adult title, just for an added warning, like "this comic contains over 18 material, are you sure you want to go further?", and if you click "no" you just stay on the page you clicked the link on.

I have a Teen rated comic along with my Adult rated ones (I need to update that when I get the chance). I don't worry all that much about it. My adult comics have a giant sized disclaimer on them; they're the very first thing you read when you go to read them. Unless you're at a higher resolution than 1024x768 you can't see the comic at all. This way, if you scroll down to read the comic you are saying you acknowledge that you're reading something that could be offensive to you. Of course, there will always be people who ignore the disclaimer and then send me flame emails about my comics…

Yes but the question is would you get more readers if you had those comics under two seperate accounts? Given the fact you say you get hate mail that suggests that you might which is what I am concerned about in my personal situation.

I would get more readers if I updated more often (I do when I have time, which is not something I have a lot of right now). The adult comics would get more readers for obvious reasons, though (well, at least I think so).

Yes, I am using two accounts. Old habits die hard and I've used both this and my other account on DrunkDuck long ago before it had its meltdown. When Drunkduck was revived I decided to keep that practice. My style isn't hard to figure out when you look at the comics on both accounts, and the name/email address at the bottom of the comic account are dead giveaways to everyone who reads the comics on both my accounts.

Never really thought about it. I don't have any comics aimed at kids, so it doesn't really affect me. If someone finds the fact I do a mature comic off putting, then they can not read it.

I'd also like to be able to search by rating, but not because AC bugs me, just so I can do a more refined search.

My comic penis is done in extremely bad taste lounge-in-cheek satirical parody style. Its all for laughs and never intends to really offend or make anybody feel bad. Unfortunately, some people are what I've found in my research, to be of poor judgment and misinformed. After re-evaluation I've decided that my comic was not acceptable for anyone under a teen audience, for cartoon nudity, violence, and instances foul language. All of which has been toned down considerably in the last month as part of a phasing out, soon enough penis won't have as much questionable content as it does now but will still deliver the over the top content that it always has done so much better than anything else.

I'd prefer a list of guidelines as to what IS offensive, and what isn't. I'd like to know if its appropriate to feature funny characters like Big Angry Black Guy or Rape Man being themselves at their fullest in my comics, rather than watered down versions. I'd also love it if I could meet an artist that drew well and was willing to draw my comics that I've written. Seeing as how the comics community gives a shit less about writing and more about how snazzy artwork is. Ever wonder why they go all out on covers to comic books?

Really, if I had such a list of the different levels of acceptability, things would work much smoother for me. I wouldn't go "well I can't do this, that'd bust me up to an A rating" or "No, this isn't funny its just sexist, racist, and homophobic." I need some type of editorial system in place outside my own personal judgment. Perhaps an EDITOR of some kind is in order.

I happen to think that we all have a place together online. E rated stuff like Zoggbert and Fred and the more adult oriented stuff like my penis. Then you've got more T stuff like Detective Fork & Pinky Ta, stuff thats not necessarily offensive, but if you're a xenophobic idiot your mind will explode from the film noir detective stuff or the butts driving tanks.

Yes but once again I'm not asking if Mature content gets you reader, of course it does, just like inoffenisive family friendly material will get you readers.

The question is will having adult content and content aimed at being family friendly too close together hurt your readership?

IE:

Guy: Oh man it is time for me to get my freak on. Lets go check some comics! Huh? What is this? Kiddy #$(#$ oh man I don't want to see that while I am online. I'm goint to THIS site instead and turning on some rampant swearing music. Psssh the Happy Ferret, weak man! And here I though that author was hard core!

or

Parent: Look timmy a new comic from that wonderful author of the Happy Ferret comic. Lets go take a look at….OH DEAR GOD! DON'T LOOK TIMMY! Oh, no, oh NO! Timmy you are NEVER allowed to read ANYTHING from that author again! No more Happy Ferret, EVER!

And is so what is to close? Specifically do you think having them in the same account be clearly divided to close?

That parent is going to have to deal with the fact that there are worse things on the internet.

Ratings are different for everyone. I heard parents were angry at the spongebob movie because patrick showed his ass, and they're kids shouldn't be watching that. Everyone has an ass. Big deal. But it was a big deal to the parents.

I think I have an idea… Do you know how there's a link for only DrunkDuck Manga and DrunkDuck horror? Maybe there should be a DrunkDuck adult link (that only members 18 and older can see) and a DrunkDuck kids link (that everyone can see). It's just a suggestion. (…Maybe you already have the adult thing, and I can't see it! You clever admins, you!)

I really like that idea! (If that counts for anything) I envision the adult portal looking like vegas. Mmmm…gaudy…

Heck, I plan on showing a bare behind in my T+ comic and was told there wouldn't be a problem!

I've posted the suggestion before and it didn't get a response…

As for the kids lying about their ages, that would make it their fault that they came across adult content. DD wouldn't have done anything wrong. Same with the people who flame Kennatsu. All he has to say is "You should have read the disclaimer" and be done with it.
