there is a website called freerice.com where you have to find the meaning of a bunch of words and each word you get right donates some rice to the poor people who need food. you should try it http://www.freerice.com/

Interesting. :)

It's a nice idea, but I say, bugger the games, just give the guys the rice they need.

"Look, we know you're starving guys and do we have food we'd like to give you, but we need to wait till some 13 year old halfway around the world guesses the right meaning for Parsimonious. When he does, you can have a spoonful." :)

Those word meaning games can be fun though ^_^

but with my large vocabulary (and a dictionary :D) i have donated 500 grains of rice!!!11! and counting cuz i play it more than once. also they can't just give rice away. the money is donated by the advertisements that pay for putting their link their. all the money is used to buy the rice.

Sounds like a damned decent thing to do, actually… guess I'll give this a crack.

No, I mean without asking people to click here or there or even having a site for it at all. If you're serious, just give.

But your site does have the thing of having sponsors. I suppose the visitors it attracts makes it worth their while to give away the money.

It's times like this I love having the Microsoft Word synonym option. Doesn't always work, but I gave about 600 grains. Man I was bored

See, they do it not because they're so fixated on sponsors and visitors, per say. The traffic gives the site the money to buy, in the case of Free Rice, the rice they give away. It even says so on the site, in the FAQ; The ads at the bottom of the screen generate money to pay for the rice.
I assume the ads = money thing is the same for similar "click and give" sites.

In other news, Free Rice is fun. I'm getting a wider vocabulary from it! =D

Well, I got to 3580 grains before I realized that the words were, oddly enough, killing my brain.
Whoot.

I log on once in a while. For me, the fact that I'm helping to feed the hungry is a bonus since I love word games anyway. The thing I find funny is how impressed all of you seem that you managed to get 500 or 600 grains of rice. I mean, when I play it's usually until I make it to 2000 minimum. Heck, it's a lot easier now; when it first started you only donated 10 grains with a correct answer. Now it's 20.

At least Dragonizer managed 3580.

I managed 5220 before I got bored.

I still like the idea of just giving it to them, though the game probably does keep people coming back. I wonder how their advertising makes them enough to keep up with the donations though. It seems like they'd have more donations than money.

I did 260 grains in my spare time from memory while at work. A couple of the words were actually hard, but yeah, a basic knowledge of latin is helpful, like Memmy said.

Rice is extremely cheap and doesn't have much nutrition, though.
I wonder why people think that it's so generous to give RICE to poor children.

Well it's true that it doesn't have much nutrition to start with.

but condiser the reason why rice is so popular in some areas:
1)easy to store. you don't worry about uncooked rice going bad if you store it safely in a dry area. it doesn't need to be refrigrated nethier. Whereas other food types aren't so easy to store safely in places with no fridges at all.

2)while it isn't much on it own as a meal in terms of flavor, etc… it still can be rather filling when you just want to eat something to kill the hunger.

Yeah, I guess people have their reasons.
But it doesn't even taste good unless you have something to go with it. >.<

lol. to me it's just like water… on it own it's just… tasteless. with other things it can taste great though.

Whose job is it to count individual grains of rice?

I wouldn't want to draw that straw–no matter the cause.
