Is it in bad taste to add a ton of friends?

Posted at

…even if you do not know them? Because I want to promote my comic, but there isn't much I can do. I looked at a thread asking how to promote a person's comic and a member said they just added 1000 friends. This seems like a good idea but it seems kind of desperate. What do you think?

i think it kind of is a bad show. i mean, i don't approve anyone on my friends list unless i've read their comic, or they've read mine. it's seems tacky and in bad form. kind of like those myspace friend whores that need thousands of friends.

i think the best way, and most constructive way, to increase your reader base is to actually read and comment on other people's comics. post in the comic's forum to get some good criticism and reviews.

Well, there's no way someone can refuse to be friended on DD (which seems kind of silly, but eh). I don't think there's anything really wrong with it, it's kind of like people leaving flyers on your parked car. It may not necessarily be wanted, but there's no harm in it and it's not putting anyone on the spot to go read it.

There are lots of ways to get noticed on DD and the internet though- the main ones I think are posting on the forums, and leaving comments (that aren't obviously spammy junk) on others' comics. There's also a great, huge thread about how you can get people to read your comic… just remember that getting attention often takes time, whether the comic is awesome or not. There's so much out there that it's virtually impossible for a comic to catch a huge audience in the first few months unless it gets major outside support, like a plug from someone big or a featuring.

I actually make a point not to read a person's comic if I think they're only friending me to get me to read it. It's just annoying.

This is the internet, bad taste on here is weird fetish porn or 2 girls 1 cup.

Whatever Hippievan. Sharing your comics with each other is what this website is about. Go out and read other peoples stuff leave nice comments and they'll do the same. That's why we're all here. :)

but there isn't much I can do.
This is seriously the only way you could think of? There's dozens upon dozens of ways to get readers- get creative and look up how to promote yourself.

And I dislike it, I used to be fine with it and I'd friend anyone who friended me first, but eventually I got sick of clicking a billion times to friend one person so now they rot in my inbox building. Forever.
(until i get around to them)

I have no problem with people sharing their webcomics with me! I just don't want people friending me only for that reason. I want my friends to be people here who I'm friendly with. If someone were to send me a pq or something asking me to give their comic a read that would be just fine with me.

Ok Hippie I got you let me add this… I would say it's in bad taste just to friend them. You should check out their stuff if you want them to do the same.

I think it borders on spam. I dont give a shit about anyone's comic on this site unless I actually go out and look for it. I dont need people sending me something saying they're my "friend" just so I can read their shitty sprite comic.

There is a reason, afterall, that sites like Myspace allow someone to accept or decline friend requests.

I think promoting your own comic is an awful reason to add a friend. And I think a friend is just that… an actual friend. I don't reciprocate a "friending" unless I've actually had some sort of meaningful interaction with them before.

Yes it's in bad taste. I don't reciprocate an "Add Friend" (that came out of the blue) if I click on the profile and find the person already has 100+ friends. It's red light #1 for me.

That's a pretty big commitment, think you can live up to it?

You can get graves that are like those motel rooms with the door that attach them to eachother. Oh man, those are sweet!

They're all just copying me! Man… I was the first one who started doing that. lol!

Actually, back when we were testing it out for Volte, I added all the people I was most pally with, but because it was in the testing stage, they never got any of those PQs informing them about it. And the only friends we could really have were other admins. TheScott added me ;)

I just add people when they add me now… I don't care if they have 200+ friends, I add them anyway. But I can't stand people leaving messages such as "Thanks for adding me!" or "check out my comic", or "thanks for adding me, check out my comic!".

Then it's time to delete.

With like, one or two exceptions, I only friend people who friend me first.
Mostly cause I'm wondering why they even bothered in the first place.
I'm nobody!
People are odd like that.

Also, I just noticed, I've got 13 friends. Thirteen. Spookily funny. Mwahahaha.

So yeah, you can't go wrong friending people who friend you first.

Most of the people I friend are people whose comics I actually read on a very regular basis. Some of my friends are from Top Drawer where we bonded through insults and hatred. I think it is in poor taste just to add people so they'll read your comic though.

I kind of forget about the add friends thing. I get reminded by the random "YOu've got mail" about once a month.

I only add to my friends list people I like and would be pleased to have as a friend. I don't mind anyone adding me as a friend, but c'mon, show a little good taste, alright? Just because you added me does not require me to read your comic, and I often won't, unless that person shows even a mild interest in me or my comic.

Simple as that.

I have gotten more willing to add friends as time has gone on, but still, I refuse to do it for no good reason.

Personally I think it's rude to do something like that. I have a lot of friends but that's because I want to meet more people, people like me (who likes the same things as me like yuri, shoujo-ai etc etc AND people who are very interesting and makes good art).

*sigh*

Lately I've been trying to bond with my 'friends' but some of them are not replying because they're busy. But that's okay. Been checking out their comics too and I'm glad I did that because most of their works are very interesting.
