I recently joined a mirror site, where they're talking about introducing a ban on agressive advertising on the forums. You know the type of thing: posting endless variations of "and that's exactly why you should read !" after a brief nod to the threads original topic.

What do you think? Should these creators be allowed to bury themselves in their own obvious desperation, or should there be a ban to give the rest of us a break from such hilarious and endearing activity?

Well the way we approached that here was to limit it to the HELWID forum and quietly have a word with anyone who annoyingly derails threads doing that- or does it in people's comic comment sections.

…so it's a "ban" of a sort, but it's more unspoken. You know?
It's like; "we don't do that sort of thing here."

I wouldn't like to have to have a ban. And people should be able to talk about their own comics on a comic hosting site, as long as they fit it in with what the topic is in a natural way and aren't dicks about it.
If there was an official ban people would really start to feel wary about what they could say about their own work, whatever the context. That seems like it'd be a bit too oppressive.

i like the way we take care of it here and i think it's totally reasonable that people should get a smack on the wrist for being that rediculous. it just makes the whole site look bad when you pop into a forum and every other doofus is whoring out their site whenever they can. i mean i know webcomics arent ussually very professional in the first place, but come one. i for one don't appreciate some loud idiot making MY comic look like a joke becuase it's on the same site.

That's one of the reasons I usually stay away of the DD forum, don't get me wrong, I love it here and the DD forums are great, but I remember once I posted an opinion in an "old" thread and rapidly got "slapped" with "warning" even thou I did posted a comment according with the thread. It's a bit annoying that some moderators rapidly assume that some postings are for the purpose of self promoting. Sadly we can't blame moderators for thinking so because some people do these sorts of things. I assume that some moderators are a bit more giving or open minded that others.

Yeah i sort of think it's fair. I'm not talking some newbie putting their thread in the wrong area, but someone cheapening the discussions with self-served plugging/bragging. It also encourages other posters to do it just like Pit said.

But yeah there's a nice difference between talking about your comic and just wanting some hits. >_>

I'm a bit disapointed.
I naturally assumed from the title that this thread was talking about me!

Pur-lease, there's really no need for such shameless self promotion, especially here. I mean, isn't that why we have signatures in this forum? I mean, with every post a user makes means a potential plug in the form a little banner. Networking is such a better and more tasteful way of making yourself known.

Sure, people will notice you if you shout your lungs out, but people will only approach you if you're not whoring yourself out. Unless you're in Bangkok, HEYO.

i can't imagine anyone putting that much (un)creative energy into shilling their comic has much energy left over to actually make pages for it.

unless they're making sprite comics or ripping of someone else.

Two words: Project Wonderful.

Have you seen how many of those ads are porn-related? And this is mostly on comic sites like F@NBOY$ and MSPA.

Y'know, so did I. But we all know this is a big conspiracy of yours.

And then you get offended when someone assumes that "shameless self-promotion" is one of your primary motives for posting anything? :]

edit: can't speel

This thread is rapidly becoming a prime example of the very thing it was intended to discuss.

I'm catching a whiff of something not dissimilar to irony!

XD Me too. I don't think I self-promote enough. It is obvious by the fact that one of my banners comes up with an X.

This thread is great and all, but people really should be reading more PINKY TA!

That's P I N K Y T A

www.PinkyTA.com

You should read it. Tell your friends. Tell your enemies. Tell you children. Tell your parents. Tell your lover. Tell you spouse. Or whatever, you know?

Anyway, enough talking. Check these babies out ^^

It will change your life. ;)

BTW, derailing a thread to promote your comic like a dick isn't cool. -_-
P.S. -I'm a dick.

There's shameless self-promotion and shameful self-promotion as is stated in the topic's title.

You can self-promote in a humorous way like Ozone and Hark do with a nod and a wink and it's understood that they know they're being dicks and we can all laugh about it and check out their awesome comics because of that welcoming sense of humor.

Or we can just be blantantly obnoxious like a B-Movie ad for something ridiculously titled Attack of the Robofemoids or some such.

Your banner gallery is far too impressive to be shameful Ozone and Bravo1102, your Rolls On Floor Laughing B Movie Poster fails miserably to be obnoxious!

If only HELWID was this good. :)

Edit: Ozone, you actually linked them all too? This is shamelessness elevated to an art!
