http://georgewashington2.blogspot.com/2009/02/where-jobs-are.html

Health care jobs will be plentiful. Even in bad financial times, people need to see the doctor. Any health care related profession is a good area to be in, especially elder care-related jobs

Alternative energy will be a growth field, especially for engineers [my comment: energy efficiency - including the reduction of energy loss across power lines - will probably also become a hot area]

Anything which helps people save money will be in demand

Now I have to go back to college for six years to become a doctor. D:

(Healthcare is one of the least interesting things for me to practice personally… I'd rather become a teacher, which it looks like everyone I know from my college is also doing. Teachers are in demand.)

Security "Officers" (not "Guards") are always in demand. Especially if you don't have a criminal record. :)

Of course, you do have to put up with low pay, lousy hours and lousy places to work. But why care about that now? Any job is better than being jobless. :)

That and Pharmacy techs. Apparently the need for drugs is growing. Who'd have guessed?

Personally, I think I'll stick to my guns and just be poor. I was planning on it anyway. There's always a need for good artists and designers and I'm starting to get a lot better at this stuff than a lot of people I know.

The porn industry is one I never thought would be asking for bailouts. I mean, how the heck can sex go out of fashion?

Eh. Do what you love and be happy and poor.

Now I'm a hypocrite. ;) I'm living every day regretting my chosen degree while searching for jobs I can't find or can't get. (If you want to actually eat, don't do what you love. Do what you have to. Otherwise, live with your parents and live on dreams and air.)

Sorry. I've been feeling very cynical lately. -_-

The trouble with doing what you love is…it pretty soon gets to be just a job… I have figured out, you have to learn to love what you do… But you can still do what you love–thats why I make a comic on the side!

As for jobs…they are out there. My own company is still hiring and growing. We just bought a new factory space and are expanding our admin and engineering area. Life isn't all bad!

My mom tried to study to be a pharmacy tech. :V My mom can't follow through on these kinds of commitments.

I'm well-versed enough in various kinds of graphic design to be able to do jobby stuff without getting sick of it while still honing my other loves - illustration and all that. But this artsy stuff is really "gaahhh" as far as hiring's concerned lately (depending on where you live, also). No, there's not always a demand for art. (Apparently people will deliberately hire others to do crap for them… actual, watered-down crap. Why can't I be hired to do crap for at least some money?)

Most people can't, isn't the drop-out rate of people trying to become pharmacists like 70%? I'm not sure on the # so don't quote me on that, i've just heard it's high.

It's mostly because there is a massive shortage on nurses nation-wide and it's where the money is at. Also some people just like to HELP. I almost took up radiology until I reasoned that the last thing I should do is take pictures INSIDE someone's head. :3

Same here…what was I thinking? A BFA in Art? Did I really waste hundreds of thousands of dollars to get that? I wish I had a time machine right now…

And what sucks is that now, I don't have the time or money to go back to college and get another degree. Who has time to do something like that while working a 40-hour work week? Even if one took evening classes, there's no time to do homework and projects.

…But at least I have a job. I know a lot of people who don't and I'm grateful I'm not one of them. I was unemployed for three months after moving to another state four years ago, and it was pure hell.

Maybe because when they learn about all those drugs and the weird side-effects like death and bleeding out the anus, they realize they don't want to become a part of it. ;)

True, as does McDonald's and your local 7-11…but minimum wage sure as heck doesn't pay for a mortgage, let alone simple utility bills. ;) And those kinds of jobs aren't exactly resume builders….good for high school kids, though. My first job was a cashier at Arby's my senior year of high school. I liked it because I got free fries. lol!

Doh, forgot my Sarcasm tags! XD

I've been lucky there, first job ever. First year wasn't bad, and I was offered a management position for my second year. (shocking for me) Now heading into my third year with pay that isn't that bad for someone in College.

Not to mention, in the US, people PAY for their healthcare. When you work for companies and hospitals that make a profit off of sickness, they can afford to pay their workers insane amounts of money.

If you got the cash, go back to school. Now's the best time to do it. This recession/depression won't last forever, so look for the opportunities that fit the time.

I wonder if being a Psychiatrist is part of the healthcare industry that is growing or is it just physical health that's flourishing. Any thoughts?

I'm double majoring in Graphic Design and English. If that doesn't get me some sort of job…I'll just wallow in my cardboard box. My parents tried to get me to go into accounting…I ran away screaming and grabbed the nearest pencil and started drawing.

I've got a couple more years of school, so hopefully things will be a little better by then.
