Favorite Poem by Edgar Allan Poe

Posted at

Wow… this is an amazingly hard question to answer. lol!

I would say that "A Dream Within a Dream" and "The Raven" are my two favorites. Picking between the two, however, is not an easy task.

"A Dream Within a Dream" was particularly important to me as I created Edgar Allan Poo, so I'll share it with you…

A Dream Within a Dream
By Edgar Allan Poe

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

So how about you? What is your favorite poem by Mr. Poe?

It's not really a poem, but I like the Tell Tale Heart.

I saw a dramatic film reading of "The Tell Tale Heart" by Vincent Price that was absolutely amazing!

Careening way off-topic, have you seen Tim Burton's short called 'Vincent', about a little boy who thinks he's like the Vincent Price he sees in the movies?

Well, at least it rhymes.

Yeah, it's a masterpiece if you ask me. Tim won several awards for the film, too.
Despite making perfect sense, Hollywood stood by their decision anyway. lol!

Haven't read Poe so far, I tried once, but I was too little to understand, so I gave in. After that the book just didn't manage to my hands and I have no idea where it is now:( However I've read Brudbury's Martian Chronicles and there was a story there titled "Usher II", relatin' to Poe's story. It was really awesome, if you haven't read it so far, I recommend it!

First off, thank you for dropping by the forum, my friend! :)

As far as "Usher II," I have indeed read it. I have most of Bradbury's stuff.

I hate to hear that about Poe's stuff. The cool thing is that you can find his work all over the internet. Hope you'll give him another chance. Perhaps "Fall of the House of Usher?" I think you'd dig it. :)

Yup. I'm gonna try soon. Right now I'm searchin' for Pratchett's Colour of Magic I have to read by 14th of May (school…) and it's not available at any bookstore in my city. That's purely a bad luck of mine…

Ooooh! Great book! You're really going to enjoy it!

Best of luck finding it, mate! I know how it is to live in a tiny town–trust me.

I live in a city, but there aren't many big bookstores here and the small ones don't have fantasy…

I found the book in mp3 files in the Internet but they don't open in WMP:( Bad luck. Hopefully the book will arive next week.

I really enjoy Terry Pratchett. He's a good writer. Much better than R.A. Salvatore in my opinion.
