Thread "Retro Valentine's Day Cards!" in forum "Comic Talk and General Discussion *"

Hello, hello!

It is finally February, which means that the season of Eros, better known as Cupid, is before us. Valentine's Day is one of those worldwide holidays that is celebrated to varying degrees. When I was really young, Valentine's Day was a really fun holiday because every kid in school was required to bring cards for enough people in the classroom and everyone walked away with a bag of chocolate goodies. It was a very charming holiday mainly because the cards were always light-hearted and had a corny pun on them.

I have devised a perfect plan to recreate the Valentine's day of yore by combining original art from webcomics found here on Drunk Duck and the same format as those perforated mass-produced Valentine's cards.

Here are the ground rules:
1. Create a Valentine's Day card using your own original characters or fanart for your favorite webcomics on here (I guess you should ask permission if you are drawing someone else's character).

2. The design can be as simple or elaborate as you like, just keep it within the boundaries of 275 pixels x 400 pixels.

Here is a sample template (with accurate dimensions):

3. The design can be portrait or landscape, so (275W x 400L) or (400W x 275L)

4. Please keep the designs G-rated, or appropriate enough to show a small child.

5. Send all Valentine's Day cards to kawaiidaigakusei(at)gmail(dot)com OR upload them to a photo-hosting site and Post them directly to this forum OR send me a PQ ( https://next.theduckwebcomics.com/quack/compose/?user=kawaiidaigakusei ) with a link to the image.

6. Please submit the completed card designs by Sunday, February 8, 2015. Noon PST.

Your card can display Fifty-Shades of Fuschia/Magenta/Red (just remember to keep it kid-appropriate).

I will post ALL Valentine's Day cards that I recieve (as long as it follows the suggested guidelines) with a link back to your comic page in next Monday's Newspost on February 9, 2015.

Not a tradition I'm familiar with in this part of the world. What sort of "corny puns" do you mean? Like that Simpson's episode with the Choo-choo-choose me card?

Absolutely, that "I Choo-choo-chooose You" example from the Simpsons is similar to the card distribution here. Only Ralphie's card was much bigger and more elaborate than the usual cards handed out. They are usually really small notes that are not as big as notecards that have a single phrase written on them.

There are so many corny designs with cartoon characters or Disney shows posing in front of a heart background and a phrase written across the image.

Ack, my childhood! :') I had exactly those valentines one year!

@Gunwallace: To add onto kawaii's description…at my school, we would all make an envelope out of construction paper and hang it on the front of our desk. Everyone would then go around and drop a valentine into each person's envelope. It was common to stick a little candy, like a Hershey's kiss or a heart-shaped sucker, to all the cards you gave out. If you were very brave, you might make a special valentine or add an extra chocolate for your crush. It was a really sweet tradition, and because everyone got a valentine from everyone else no one felt left out. :)

This was my experience in school with Valentine's Day Cards. And there was no little red haired girl but there was Kelly Teeto and she kicked me in the shins so badly and so often I had difficulty walking. I had a really miserable grade school experience.

Miss Teeto sounds more like Lucy than the Little Red Haired girl.

I am sorry about your shins bruises, but a last name like “Teeto” almost predestined her to become a playground bully.

My experience was similar… except there was no red haired girl and never got a Valentines. Oh, well… Then again my family was pretty poor at the time and everyone at the school knew it…

My comic doesn't stray too far into the red end of the spectrum - can I get away with orange? Orange can be romantic too:
Roses are orange,
Violets are orange,
Come with me to that mountain

There are no restrictions on colour schemes for submissions. Orange is truly a romantic colour! Orange sunsets, orange honeysuckle, orange desserts, and Orange Days. It is all good.

Don't know Blorenge is very pretty and has a nice view. Something romantic about Wales with all that whole Celtic, Bythonic Gaelic Arthurian aura going on.

I might start flipping everyone's features around just to see how they look. That should probably be another thread though. I'm working on my valentine card now, which I've adapted to incorporate the magic of Blorenge. At this point Blorenge and romance are pretty much one and the same thing.

Perhaps you are on to something Kroatz, but I believe the real purpose of this thread is to promote tourism to Blorenge in Monmouthshire, southeast Wales.
