2 Quackcasy ideas I'm thinking of…

Idea 1.
Cliché myths from fiction that we all just tend to accept:
- That Indian burial grounds are magical and can cause spirits to come to the land of the living.
- that demons speak Latin, or Aramaic, or ancient Greek or any other bronze Age language.
- that guns can't harm demons or monsters.
- that dangerous animals and insects are evil and they want to kill you.
- that people get blasted through the air when shit by guns.
- that all native people can track stuff anywhere and live off the land and that they're also close to the spirit world etc…

More ftction myths please!

Idea 2:
Feeling for characters helps you get into a story or series. But the more you feel for them the more painful and unpleasant the experience when something bad happens to them, social awkwardnes, or if they lose its not an enjoyable experience and makes you want to quit the story…
Does that happen to you?

You might want to add in character that are fun and "relatable" in fiction but is just a horrible nightmare to deal in real life for idea 2.

But I do like idea 1.

Did you know the legends of the werewolf silver bullets is a recent addition? Originally it was mercury, aka quicksilver, that had an effect on them.
The silver was cooked by a hunter after killing a beast that terrorized France with a silver bullet, and it seemed like any other regular rounds seem to have no effect.

Also there was a werewolf that delivered fish to kids during Christmas. Just thought I share that one.

Hmm, this is about myths in fiction rather then in real life XD
Like you always cock guns every single time you point them at a person, or you have to rack a cartridge in a pump action shotgun every time you pick it up ^_^

Or that dumping a full drink on a person is an appropriate response to something you don't like and they will usually always sit there and calmly accept it without retaliating.

I didn't know that about mercury!

Oh, you mean like how sharp blades make a "sknit" noise or all coconut are dried out even on the trees.

I can add in the myth in fiction that fake mustaches will fool anyone, and is the "perfect" disguise. The worst offender is Gabriel Knight 3's cat puzzle, which after a long string of moonlogic puzzles end with a tall, blonde and fit managing to trick a moped rental clerk with a stolen id from a short, balding and chubby man, with the only change to said ID being a mustache penciled in.

Oh, and peanut butter being made from mixing peanut and butter. See Runaway as an example.

In fact it seems like point and click games seems to revels in fiction myths.

Haha, exactly!
Though the point and clicks are probably making fun of them LOL!

Just so you know most vampire lore is from movies and fiction.
Read a book that traced it movie to movie.
Love at first Bite made fun of a couple. At one point vampires got conflated with werewolves and you could kill a vampire with silver bullets. So Richard Benjamin goes in and shoots George Hamilton (as Dracula),"six silver bullets in the chest, the prescribed way to kill a vampire!"
"No that is for werewolves."
Richard Benjamin gets dragged out by the cops for attempted murder saying "it's all right, he's fine, silver bullets are for werewolves and he's a vampire!"

American Werewolf in London corrected it with werewolves because the special branch kills the werewolf with regular bullets. Put enough bullets into a man-sized target and you literally shred the target.

Some weapons have to be cocked to fire, or you'll go off half-cocked. (On flintlocks, half cock was the safety setting) It's often assumed a weapon is stored without a bullet in the chamber. Or at least that's how you're supposed to do it. So of course you'd cock the weapon before shooting to put a round in the chamber. There's also single action versus double action and that cocking some weapons decreases trigger pull so the first shot is more accurate.

But in fiction it all gets mixed up into one big soup, so characters will do it for weapons you don't need to do it with.

Here's one: most myth busting types say that fanning a single action revolver isn't real. Thing is, it does work. Works well in fact for quick shooting and staying on target. But then the whole shoot out in most Westerns is complete fiction to begin with.

In his comic Death Porn El Cid got it right when the neophyte wander grabs an M-16 to go to town on the baddies and it just goes "click" and he's subdued. Readers assumed it was because he didn't take it off safe and I pointed out that an M16 is carried without a round in the chamber and you have to "lock and load" before firing to put a round in the chamber. One of the main characters grabs a weapon later and the first thing she does is pull the bolt back (lock) and let it go forward (load) to chamber a round.

There is an otherwise forgettable action movie where the baddies run around shooting at full auto, hitting very little and a veteran teaches the regular folk rising up against the drug cartel to aim and shoot single rounds or short three round bursts. The regular folk win because they're actually hitting what they shoot at.

How about computer hackers of any unspecified degree can simply do magic with computers? They can hack into any intelligence agency's and high security facility's computer system and/or top secret database lickety-split and somehow leave no traces.

Hell, the character Hackman in Kung Fury was such a computer wiz being a hacker he could hack time itself^^ Brilliant piece of parody for a movie that is a parody on anything late 80's, early 90's action fare^^

I like to add in that all demons are from psudeo-Christian origins and often tie into the fall from Eden, no matter where they are on Earth.

Honestly I would love if midway through the story, playing everything straight and typical before it's revealed the demon was a Kitsune the whole time and the typical exorcism stuff is meaningless.

The first idea certainly has more talking points, but with some is it more a case of accepting the lore portrayed in that story?

Obviously this doesn't apply to characters wind-milling when shot or the gun inaccuracies.

I suppose you can add knocking people out for plot convenience with no lasting effect.

One that bugs me is people fist fighting robots and beating the crap out of them. And normal people punching through brick walls and not just uselessly breaking their hands.

Salt being a barrier to ghosts and demons makes me laugh. Garth Ennis did a good pisstake on that in Crossed.

Also the whole crazy/insane/evil stuff.

That you can suffocate someone quickly and easily.

That a stab to the gut will kill a guard. Have to cut their throat or stab directly in the heart which can gush blood. Supposedly the best was to stab in the side of the neck and cut out. Cuts the throat and larynx at the same time.

That a blow to the head just knocks someone out.

Fist fights are relatively bloodless. Faces bleed. A lot. Don't ask how I know, but I know.

That any sword can easily lop off limbs and heads

You can kill someone wearing armor with a neat slash or stab, especially chain mail?

This might be a bit of an old one. But, haven't the movie Jaws (1975) taught us all that sharks are but mindless eating machines with the voracity, digestion and masticational force of a cartoon tazmanian devil i.e they will eat absolutely anything in their path.

Proceeding to om-nom-nom the boat even after it has or hasn't consumed its crew, gobbling up wood, metal and plastic. Also, best way to take out a white shark is to apparantly shove a pressurized scuba tank into its mouth that will explode along with the shark's head if you shoot it. I don't know if that's how oxygene really reacts to bullets, but many oxygene tanks have been used as explosives like that in movies and video games if my memory serves me right:P

What about Jaws 4 where we learn that voodoo shark roar and explode when shown strobing lights.

Oh yeah? I gotta see that one someday:D Also, I've seen a review of Sharknado, but I haven't seen the movie myself yet. Continuing the tradition of sharks being all-noming eating machines and making them airborn via tornado. Ingenious^^

That proper sword-fights all involve spins.

That really good swordfighters twirl their weapons really fast.

That the best way to dodge things is to backflip away from them.

That two guns or two swords are better than one.

That the correct way to fire a sub-machine-gun or assault rifle is always full auto and always from the hip and you always hit the maximum number of people that way.

That huge cocks equal instant pleasure for ladies and never involve any discomfort, pain or injury…

That all women have large boobs and small boobs are rare and shameful.

That women step out of bed or the shower with towels around their chests and always have sex with their bras on.

That there is never enough to to explain simple misunderstandings or vital pieces of information.

That big muscular men are always stupid and communicate with grunts and growls and small men are always sneaky, smart and sleazy.

That woman always get justifiably angry, enraged, and violent when they have their periods.

That knocking someone out is always safe and humane.

Here's another interesting one:

That people in mediaeval style villages and earlier (not in trade routes and not in Ports) were super diverse and accepting of strangers.
They weren't 😅
They were suspicious and looked very much the same. Doesn't matter what country or ethnicity either. They would be suspicious of people they didn't know and weird about people who look different.

Towns and cities on trade routes WOULD be more diverse though and more accepting. Port cities much more so.

Space myths:

Gravity on spaceships is easy to achieve… It's not, it's hard.

Grey aliens are a thing.
Nothing about them is a thing, they're all a damn fantasy from one initial crazy guy and need to be dropped from fiction.

Humanoid aliens are logical.
Not in any way at all. No alien based on any earth life is logical or likely. Bilateral symmetry and even human scale is unlikely. Aliens could be tiny or gigantic.

That we could ever land on a planet and just take off our space helmets and walk around as normal.
Likley never happened unless you terraform it first. No one will ever causally interact with alien life as if it's earth life.

Explosive decompression is incredibly dangerous in space and aircraft on earth…
It's not, we only pressurise things to one atmosphere, that means there's not that much pressure to hold back.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

About decompression- it IS dangerous to people's health and will kill you because you can't breathe. You will die.
It is VERY dangerous!

The point is that a small hole won't destroy the whole craft or suck you out like spaghetti and a large hole wont suck out everything in the craft.

The prototypes start with the Betty and Barney Hill abduction case. They were from an episode of "Outer Limits" that Betty Hill had seen the previous week.

Earlier pulp fiction illustration also haf similar.

But there's too much lore about them to just drop them now. Might as well drop fae from fantasy fiction.

My favorite is that future beam weapons have recoil. That's mainly because some of the movie props were modified firearms and actually fired to aid the SFX in placing the beam animation.

That cannon balls explode. Cannon balls typically bounced and didn't explode in nice little high explosive poofs when hitting the ground. Bomb rounds weren't used like that until the invention of shrapnel.

That pre modern cavalry always charged at full gallop.

Armor piercing cannon rounds don't exist and everything explodes. (See cannon balls above)

Grenades have really big explosions with fire effects.

When on a march you would stop and cook up something every night usually some caught animal. Conversely, myth busters will try to tell you that stews and soups weren't typically made when in fact the opposite was true. Usually any game caught wouldn't be fried on a spit, but thrown into a pot for a stew or soup.

Re: the grey aliens- it's a myth from fiction though that people accept as a real thing 😅
Same as saucer ships or that area 51 is about aliens.

Re: explosive canonballs-
Slight caveat… They did exist but as morter shells, supposed to be fired at high angles and explode in the air. Those are from at least the 16th century.
Not meant to explode on the ground or be fired at low angles like bouncing canonballs- though, that's true.

Precisely, that's why I mentioned "bomb shells" which was the contemporary name for the shells fired by mortar. I've seen demonstrations of Coehorn mortars. They have competitions at American War of Independence reenactments. They were also put on regular carriages and occasionally used on battlefields to shell the enemy but quite different from conventional cannon. There were specialized howitzers that could fire shell ammunition but again not cannon balls as seen in movies.

Again the lore and mythology about Grays, Area 51, Operation Moondust, MJ12 is so vast and mostly fictional actually being disinformation from various intelligence folks to totally put UFO investigation into disrepute. Instead they found put just how gullible people are so they fed them more ridiculous stories. I use it in my stories and can have a lot of fun with it because it all is the modern faerie land. Insert self promotion here for Bravo1102 comics like "Belle's Best the Films of Belinda Brandon" especially Space Thrall, "Attack of the Robofemoids" . It is an integral part of my world building and what the REAL truth is behind all thd X-Files nonsense.

Space Thrall takes place at the rumored Deep Underground Military Base at Dulce Nevada. I study the lore. Saying not to use it like you do– I USE IT so lay off.

That MiB (Men in Black) are aliens or a super secret government organization. They're regular military Intelligence folks using intelligence debrief and interrogation methods to discredit witnesses and gain information.

That mechs (as in giant robots) are in any way a practical military device. Sure there are experiments but then the military also experimented with ESP and remote viewing. Also transforming would be highly impractical (as shown comically in Project A-ko)

Coughing up blood is a sure sign of Tuberculosis and that death is imminent.

You can hit someone so hard they cough up blood, but some bandages and they're fine.

Nobody bathed in Europe from the fall of Rome until the Renaissance.

People who live on farms have no experience with sex.

People who wear animal skins never actually bother to properly tailor them but just tie them on with thongs or throw them over their shoulder.

Torches were the main illumination before light bulbs.

I like to add in that after all government collapse money will still be good.

I would argue there might be a small group that will try to keep paper cash going but it would be more of a weird cult that base their religion on it rather than proper economics.
