Those images that get stuck in your head

HippieVan at 12:00AM, Aug. 7, 2015

Is there a word for these?

I’m talking about those things that you automatically start drawing when you have a piece of paper and no specific ideas in mind. The images that find their way into the margins of your notebooks, onto napkins in restaurants…or on a whiteboard at work, as in the picture above. They might even show up in your more polished art pieces. Like M. C. Escher’s tessellations or Louis Wain’s cats, those things you just started drawing one day and never stopped.

I’ve got a few of my own, all very silly:
- Men with exaggerated aquiline noses, high cheekbones and round glasses and/or old-fashioned hats. This one almost certainly comes from my history nerd infatuation with Leon Trotsky as well as some other famous aquiline-nosed figures like Napoleon, Camille Desmoulins, etc.
- Cats in spacesuits or royal clothes. My life is basically cat themed, so this one isn’t too weird. (Or is it? Having four cats isn’t weird, right?)
- Anthropomorphized mushrooms. Obviously I formed this habit while drawing Izzy, and haven’t been able to kick it yet.

Do you guys have those images that keep finding their way into your work? What are they? Do you remember when/why you started drawing them?

Exaggerated stylized greyhounds. Rats of various patterns and coat types. I also sketch characters from Used Books a lot -- not the main characters though, usually ones in the works that will be introduced in the future.

I often draw a character (in recent years it's my Typical Strange characters) with a shocked/scared expression on their face. When I'm doodling, that sort of thing always seems to show up.

Trees. Since college I draw loose fored patterns of leaves. Then something historical among the trees

Looking through my scraps, the only recurring things seem to be facial expressions and figures where I'm trying out different poses. But then there'll be page after page of something I was brainstorming for a while before putting it to one side, such as a whole swathe of anthropomorphic pigs dressed as Indiana Jones.

hehe I used to draw Godzilla's head a lot...!! (the early Godzilla, with the distinct headshape - slightly bulging head, sorta puppy eyes...) I can't say that it creeps into my stuff much but I did draw it alot (along with lots of female faces and bodies) Here's a good image:

Tigers, of course! :D

My default drawings are the 90s animated Batman and Scrooge McDuck... both mark aesthetic learning periods of my childhood. Also, you can draw them with just a few lines.
