Lifting the Block

I have been feeling inspired lately. It is not to be confused with the same wave of inspiration that usually happens when I listen to Bon Iver while driving down a highway at night (even though that also works). It is the type of inspiration where a story begins to come together and all the words, pictures, and scenes all begin to form from scratch.

There once was a time that new story ideas would come so easily and naturally like my hand did not draw fast enough for the ideas in my head. My highest creative peaks usually correlate with a very busy time in my schedule, when I do not have two consecutive seconds of free time to spare. It made me wonder why these same intense moments of creativity did not happen when I have a lot of free time; it has to do with the ability to translate a real experience into a written page. When I am not busy, I lack the opportunity to have new experiences to write about.

Most of the time, a lot of the foundation of a comic story that I have created in the past comes from actual events that I have experienced in real life. I get inspiration from a beautiful location I have visited, a conversation that I participated in or overheard, or it could be based on real people or events. This is the reason why I believe writer's block is almost nonexistent when life gets extremely busy because there is a surplus of ideas and thoughts from which to draw.

Inspiration comes from many sources: William Shakespeare had several Italian cities; J. R. R. Tolkien had England and World War I; Picasso had Spain and France. I have always been searching far and wide for a spark of inspiration and I found what I have been looking for in my own backyard. The only problem with getting really creative while busy is that it puts a limit on the amount of time spent drawing or writing.

MAILBOX ROCKETSHIP by Kevin Hayman, AKA Kota

DD. I'm printing the entire run of Kota's World with Ka-Blam. It'll be five volumes at $25 each. There will be bonus stuff like new drawings of old characters, introductions by the cast, and the old guest week comics. I know there were a lot of KW fans on DD so I wanted to make sure folks over there knew it was happening.

ng–comics have the ability to transcend all ages, walks of life, eccentricities, and unique individuals. It can be used as a tool to find common ground between two strangers from different backgrounds. This experience reaffirmed the reason that I have been spending so much time working with comics.
