A young princess once went for a walk to get some fresh air and clear her head. She walked a long way, farther than she had intended but upon the way back she was still lost in deep thoughts and took the wrong path back to the castle. She wasn't unduly worried because the castle she lived in was high on a hill and could be seen from all directions, however she encountered a wide lake that she needed to cross in order to get safely home again. By good fortune there was a rowing boat close by and being fit and of an adventurous nature she knew she could row her way across. But as she went to step into the boat she noticed a scorpion was nestling in the centre. Grabbing the oar she attempted to strike it a deadly blow but the creature being far too small and agile , run up the bow and hid there out of sight until she gave up.
The sun was starting to go down and the thought of having to walk so far around the lake to get home not only seemed very tiring but also dangerous a she would inevitably find herself at some point in complete darkness, so she got in the boat and started to row across whilst the whole time keeping a very careful eye on the dark place where the scorpion was hiding.
When she finally reached the other side unharmed, she jumped quickly out and tied the boat to a tree, setting the oars neatly back inside for the owner to find and as she began to walk away the scorpion called to her and said. 'You know, I could have stung you fatally at any time as we rode across the lake together but the only time I ever thought of doing so, was when you were trying to crush me with that oar.'
