Was a time, farmers kept a couple of big, spreading leaf trees standing in the middle of their fields, to afford themselves a place to take a midday break in the shade. These trees date back to those times.
The fields they stand in were farmed long before European settlers moved into the area, and much the same crop; corn, beans and squash; what the indigenous folk called the "Three Sisters".
Though these days it's mostly corn. And mostly for pigs. C'est la'vie
