Because the East Coast runs Southwest - Northeast, when you're at Land's End off the oceanside of Long Island, you can nearly see the sun set over the ocean. Nearly but not quite. What you do get is the exact same image that you would see - probably for less time than we have measurement for - if a thermonuclear device was detonated in the sky over New York City.

But then, the sun itself is a thermonuclear device, isn't it?
