~~~~ *** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** ~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ *** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** ~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ *** ~~~~~~~~~~~ I met him downtown, not too far from where the World Trade Center had until just recently stood. It was a month after 9-11; you could still smell the stink of it in the air from blocks away. It was the day the U.S. began bombing Afghanistan. He was the one who told me the news. He thought it was a good idea. "Government's been good to me," he said. I asked him how the government had been good to him. "Got me back alive from 'Nam". Couldn't argue with that, I suppose. He was back, and he was alive. Such as it was. ~~~~ *** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** ~~~~~~~~~~~
