7 Deadly Sins

Chapter 1 - Page 4
makingcomicsstudios onI thought I would share the origins of the "7 Deadly Sins" idea with you and how it eventually arrived on Drunk Duck:
PART 1: How It Came To Be
The story was created by David Johnson, a very capable artist in his own right. In fact if you look to the very first posts of "SINS" you'll see the pinups he drew. For the life of me I can't remember how I met Dave. I imagine I answered a Digital Webbing (www.digitalwebbing.com) ad he posted. I was just chatting with him last night and brought up the fact it's been three years since I wrote up the original treatment. HOLLY SHIT time flies! Anyways…he pitched his concept of 2 gargoyles from hell trying to defect to Heaven and in order to gain entry they have to serve 1,000 years community service down on Earth. I thought that was brilliantly original.
There is tons more to the actual story which I really don't want to get into because it hasn't even been fully written out or drawn yet. We do about 8 pages a year which isn't a heck of a lot. Let me explain. David Johnson was supposed to originally draw the comic. For his own reasons he couldn't commit so I had his blessings to get the comic made elsewhere. I hit the Digital Webbing boards in search of an artist and found a duo (a couple - I mean a real couple). Alejandro Alvarez and Andrea Blanco answered the ad. They couldn't commit to a full comic because they actually do this for a living, but they would do small chapters on a limited basis. I really wanted them to do it because our personalities meshed so I agreed. I knew a guy who eventually became our letterer (Allen Freeman - www.fanaticpress.com) who puts out the anthology SLAM BANG at least once a year so convinced him to put eight pages of SINS in each book. Tangent time…Allen didn't want continuing stories in his anthology for a very good reason as the creators could disappear and the story would never be finished. I kind of gave him the first story as a one-shot and then the next time the second story kind of was the sequel to the first story and so on. OK! Maybe I didn't convince him. WELL! I cheated.
I found this cool website called Drunk Duck this past summer so I thought it was a great venue to post the completed story to date. We're only 24 pages into it - put together it the past three years. I imagine the story will be completed by 2020.
NEXT WEEK: I'll share with you an example of the script and how I personally format the stories. It may be interesting for those up-and-coming comic writers out there.
PEACE OUT!
