So there are basically three plots going on here at the same time… the climax to the Golem story arc, Deckard meeting Doc Bernstein and Motes at the orbiter. Mainly because I didn't want this episode to simply be a long mecha fight. These plots are intertwined in various ways… you'll see.
Oh yeah, "consciousness is real", that must be one of the most nonsensical phrases I'd ever let one of my characters say :-D Not that you couldn't endow it with meaning, but taken as it stands it could mean almost anything.
One thing I'm not particularly pleased with here is the placement of the countdown… because naturally you'd read Deckard's and Bernstein's discussion first, but it ends with "1", so you'd have to read the countdown parallel to it… that's a bit of a problem.
EDIT:
Nepath: Thanks! I am particularly proud of the way the coffee (or whatever it is) spilled over the folder, suggesting the cup was rolling a bit… this is one of those things which makes abstract objects much more real to me. :-) DAJB: Thanks, it's a learning curve… I'll do better next time ^^ Midge: Thanks! That would have been fun for some :-D buuut no, it's just a bit of foreshadowing… you'll see on the next page who's in chains. Fitz: I wonder… what did you think it was, if not a drink? :-D My whole concern over the countdown is that it needs more conscious thought than unconscious reading… and I wouldn't wanna disturb the reading. Now I'm not completely opposed to mecha fights, just the opposite :-) I just don't want a whole episode to consist of nothing else… The consciousness "thang" is basically at the center of A.D, I envisioned it to be a comic ABOUT consciousness. But as always, minor things like characters and a plotline need to be established to a certain degree ;-) So expect deeper thoughts about consciousness sometime soon. My personal thought about this would be, in a nutshell: consciousness is "real" in a way that it affects reality. It's not just neurons firing which establishes this causal relation, but it's the rational relation between reasons which is causally effective. This is something which Donald Davidson argued for, and there are many reasons why I think we should defend a position like that. Of course consciousness needs a physical basis, but that doesn't exclude its being irreducible. (That's not what I'm gonna preach in the comic, so it's safe to give away here :-D)
