I'm still not quite sure if this scene says more about the psychological/emotional state of Bernstein and the gorilla or about their past. Either way, I'm fine with it, I realize there's too much time wasted by explaining "origins" in a completely emotionally detached way, just stating the facts… now watch "Heart of Ice" and tell me if you would have felt anything for Mr Freeze if his origin had been told by simply stating the facts. (There's no real way to separate facts and emotion, but I'm sure you get the idea.)
EDIT:
DAJB: I presumed so :-D but… I don't think you have revealed any origins so far on Shades, or have I missed some? Midge: Thanks. Fitz: Thanks a lot, it's my personal favorite too… I have almost zero experience in drawing gorillas, so I'm glad it turned out OK ^^ Nepath: An interesting point… I guess everyone but me would be instantly reminded of the King Kong angle, but in fact I only learned to appreciate Kong some years after I'd drawn this scene. I think the main reason why I picked a primate is because he's closely related to the human species, and you instantly feel uneasy treating him as an object.
