This strip is notable for pointing out Ridley's need to smoke a cigarette whenever Air Raid Robertson makes a dumb decision that almost gets him killed. I had this gag planned for quite a while. If you go back to the second strip you'll notice that Ridley is lighting up following their plane crash in the Mysterious Jungle.

I just wanted to highlight this since I generally don't plan things that far ahead.

Anyways, Ridley fans will be happy to know that he'll have a large presence in the next couple of strips. I felt kind of bad about marginalizing him during the Fantomah stuff so you'll be getting a lot of him for this storyline.

Then again, he may end up getting benched again once the villain shows up. Ridley seems to naturally fade into the background once Air Raid Robertson finds another character to talk to. These other characters tend to ignore Ridley as well. I guess it's sidekick syndrome.

On the other hand, I had the narrator acknowledge Ridley's presence in the final caption. That breaks an unspoken rule of mine.

But, well, it fed into the joke on the last panel. Trying to score a laugh beats my little rules any day of the week.
