My Hurricane Life Page 2

Air Raid Robertson
on

I am pleased to say that this page was a lot easier to put together than the preceding one. It does help that the artistic approach to this story had been somewhat established with the completion of page one. However, I also purchased a new set of watercolor brushes in between drawing sessions. This really helped since my old brushes were even more worn-out and frayed than I realized.

I'm sure most of you recognized the Mallard Maulers as analogues of The Beagle Boys. I had designed Air Raid Arfington as a beagle, so I thought it would be a fun riff to have the antagonists of this story to be an inversion of the Duckburg format.

Sharp-eyed comics fans will point out that Carl Barks made The Beagle Boys interchangable in appearance. However, both Don Rosa and The Ducktales animators gave these characters individual appearances and personalities. I think the latter approach is more interesting, so I went in that direction.

Naturally, the driver of the giant robot is made to resemble Donald Duck. Standing behind him is a brigand who looks like Howard the Duck. And, of course, the black duck leaping about in the background is derived from the Bob Clampett incarnation of Daffy.
