This is the penultimate page of "Plain Gold Ring". It took me much longer to get to this point than I would've liked, but at least the story is just about done.
I put a lot of thought into what should be put into the dialogue for this page. It's true that I'm more or less redoing The Phantom of the Opera for this story, but at the same time I am definitely adding a personal stamp to the plot. A friend of mine (quite pretentiously) compared the situation to an orchestral conductor putting together an arrangement for performance. A Leonard Bernstein version of Beethoven's 9th is going to be quite different from a rendition by Eugene Ormandy. I can sort of see where he's coming from there.
It would be fair to say that some fragments of my personal dealings have been slipped into the proceedings of this storyline. I'm not usually very overt when it comes to doing that sort of thing in my comics, but I do think that all artists leave more of themselves in their work than they usually intend. In this case it's a bit more pronounced.
