The Undiscovered Self Page 2

Air Raid Robertson
on

Earlier this month I resolved to do at least 100 Air Raid Robertson pages for 2012. This means that I have to produce a rough average of one page every three days. That seems a bit daunting with the pieces of day-to-day life threatening to get in my way, but I do think that I'm starting to develop an artistic rhythm that will meet this demand.

I'm pretty happy with the way this page turned out. My thumbnails did not suggest the appearance of drapes in the first panel, but I added them in so it would better suit Robertson's comment. (The drapes-related exchange was planned for page one, but I pushed it to page two for pacing reasons) The tumbling panels idea was something that I saw the artist Jock do in a fairly recent issue of Batman. He was attempting to convey the character plummeting from a great height. I thought it was a cool technique for what I wanted to accomplish on this page, so I stole it.

The bottom panel obviously deviates from the house style substantially. I wanted to give something of a Neal Adams vibe with the execution. In other words, I desired to have more facial details while still keeping an aura of cartooning expressiveness. When I first thought of this story I was considering the prospect of keeping it to straight linework without any shading details outside of ink spotting. Ultimately, I decided to also use some graphite pencils to add a bit more depth to the image.
