This is the 200th page of Air Raid Robertson. As I usually do with the advent of milestone pages, I went back and read some of the old stuff. And yeah, I was more than a little mortified by the sloppy draftmanship and wonky choices I made on many of these pages.
Of course, a part of me is glad that I cringe upon looking at the earlier storylines. This means that I have made progress as an artist and that my approach to crafting comics is going to continue growing. Hopefully I will look back on this page next year and find myself slightly disgusted by it.
The Interloper previously appeared in "Flights of Fancy", crossover I had with The Unthinkable Hybrid. I didn't initially intend for The Interloper to appear in this storyline, but after some brainstorming I decided that he fit into the plot nicely.
As many of you readers know, Air Raid Robertson frequently makes references to the comics and comics artists of ages past. This page makes an homage to Dick Sprang, arguably the definitive Batman artist of the 1940's and 1950's. A typical aspect of Sprang's stories was the use of gigantic props. His most famous prop was the giant penny that remains in the Batcave even in modern comics. Dick Sprang is one of my most significant artistic inluences and he was on my little checklist of guys I want to tip my hat to in the pages of this webcomic.
"Make Mine Aristophanes" is a nod to Marvel Comics' old slogan. It also, obviously, references Aristophanes. Those who haven't taken a literature class may not be aware that Aristophanes was a classical Greek comedian and also one of the earliest-known satirists in Western culture. I consider his work to be essential reading for anyone interested in the mechanics of comedic dialogue.
You may find yourself asking "What the hell does this storyline have to do with Aristophanes?" Well, the answer will become readily apparent in the next couple of pages.
