Here, you will notice the name of Nabarzanes mentioned. He, along with Bessos and other Persian Lords betrayed Darius, and claimed themselves as Great King. Nabarzanes, (in this story) leaves before Darius is killed (historically, he doesn't) and gives Bagoas to Alexander, along with other grand gifts. Apparently, Bagoas' pleadings were what let the man escape with a bare pardon, but for the sake of moving along with the story a little quicker, I leave this part out. (But note, that the gift exchange with Nabarzanes and Alexander actually did happen, and this was how Bagoas came to the young king.)
