The Big Ice

The Big Ice

The Ross Sea was the entry point for many of the explorers of the "Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration," e.g., Scott, Amundsen and Byrd. In late winter, early spring explorers like Shackleton risked being trapped in a frozen sea. And then landing on the Great Barrier was no cupcake either. Fronting the sea, the unstable glacier is miles long. Its wall constantly corrodes at the sea, creating devastating avalanches.
