A bit of history for you: The British changed their religion more than a few times in the past 500 years; they went from Catholic to protestant, back to Catholic and then to Protestant eventually sticking with Protestant. One of the major differences between Catholics and Protestants, besides the whole divorce thing, was that Protestants didn't have as many of the decorations, the statues as Catholics; it was much more toned down. One of the things they don't have is Confession. Did you know that Catholics had mechanisms in their shrines to make their statues look like they were crying or bleeding or such? To give the illusion of a miracle.
And as for our Catholic Priest here, he has not appeared in the comic before (check Chapter 1 page 9 and Chapter 2 Page 21 to see the painting) and he's definitely a living human. Check out his eye, doesn't look anything like Angela's does it? As for him being evil… well that's up to the individual to decide. How come Angela's not evil? She's a vampire!
