A little more vampire related history for you; back in the 1700s, around 1720 if you want to be specific, people had huge vampire concerns. They would get nervous, form a mob, dig up the most recent dead guy and see if they were a vampire. Using only superficial evidence, they would then behead, stake or whatever they felt they needed to do to keep the 'vampire' from getting out of the ground. The thing is, not only did some priests condone this, but they actually participated in the 'vampire' hunts and encouraged the behaviour. After things had calmed down in the mid to late 1700s, the Christian church denounced these priests and their actions. As far as I know, the church didn't actually do anything to punish these priests or anything.
