More about Vampires and their procreation:
Releasing their own blood into their victims when they feed can be a controlled act (as demonstrated by Angela in chapter 7 page 28, panel 3). This control is not instinctual. It is learned. Thus, a fledgling vampire, such as Bernadette, would be prone to letting their own blood flow in the feeding process. This can cause a huge number of problems (which I'll get into later), so fledglings are brought up by feeding on their sire (which also has consequences which I'll get into later) until they learn to control their blood flow.
