I love the phrase "our better angels." Abe Lincoln used it once, and that's enough of an endorsement, don't you think?
Off the top of my head I can't think of an equally poetic phrase for the opposite concept. ("Our worser devils" is, of course, out of the question.) In my present state of drawing a blank, I'll settle for the flowery "the evil that men do." (That includes you, girls!)
