When the spell that split the worlds apart was created, all of the different races more-or-less knew the existence of one another. They weren't always pleased with one another, but they were at least aware. One of the aspects of the spell was to remove any knowledge of magical, mythical, or fantastic lifeforms from humanity's memories so that we no longer longed for that which we could no longer have - company.
Unfortunately, since the spell went sort of sideways and split the world into seven pieces instead of just the two, almost all parts of it malfunctioned. Humans, for instance, forgot that elves, goblins, trolls, vampires, and all the horrors that go honk in the night were REAL, but not that they didn't exist on some level.
The up side to it is that, when the walls came down, that ancestral race memory came back in full force… there was no running and screaming, "Oh my God, it's a goblin, lock up your babies!"… instead, there was just muttering, some confusion, and the occasional securing of snack foods (goblins are always hungry, just not for babies… normally, anyway).
In fact, as soon as we established things like… Credit Cards, Bank Accounts, and work visas, the evil corrupt capitalist system of ours quickly absorbed these new immigrants into the culture as quickly as it could. Shops opened near portals that catered both to the fantasy realm inhabitants curious to sample human fares and to those immigrants missing that taste of home…
And believe me, there's nothing as good as freshly made Kentucky Fried Unicorn.
The fantasy landers, of course, think humans are dumb for racism, and are quick to point out that it's not really even an issue of "race" - humans and goblins are different races; humans and other humans are just different shades. To them, it'd be like if the tabby cats all decided to mutiny and oppress the calicoes one day.
I guess the point is, whether here in Apple Valley or out there in the real world, all humans are officially playing in a much larger sandbox than they previously believed, and need to suck it up and move forward as a group, lest they collectively be eaten by something not of their race… or their Earth.
