In case you didn't notice, Leaf's outfit has changed again. The in-universe reason for this is that it's cold outside, and the other top she was wearing is flimsy. It has nothing to do with it being TOO HARD TO DRAW CONSISTANTLY, or that sometimes, I'm just laaaaaazy.

Leaf's new outfit has a lot of bizarre history, actually. On the original sprite comic which Art and Leaf came from, both Leaf and another character were based off heavily modified sprites from Final Fantasy III (the Japanese one for the NES, not FFVI for the SNES).

Specifically, both borrowed elements from the "Shaman/Devout" sprite, which was essentially a White Mage with cat ears. Leaf got some of the lower body, while the other character got the signature 'cat ears' hood. Therefore, it seemed (to me, anyway) a natural progression of events to upgrade Leaf to a cat hat as part of the cast's ongoing graphical makeover.
