By Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919)
Circa. 1885
Impressionism

While his works began more in the style of the Romantics, Renoir's signature style of high saturated colors and lights did not appear until the middle of his carrier. One of the major reasons for this is the development of modern art supplies such as paints in a tube. Artist today take their supplies for granted, as before the 1870's, if you wanted to get paint, you would have to make it from scratch. For this reason, most paintings were done in an artist's studio, including landscapes as it was virtually impossible to mix paints outdoors. The other major innovation was the invention of the box easel, a pre-made, portable easel in which the artist could carry to and from a location.
All these new luxuries came at a cost however. Before, when artists made their own paints, lots of them had secret formulas for getting different colors, meaning that every artist had their own unique palates. With a standard of colors now in existence and being used by thousands of artists, the tradition of making unique colors by adding secret ingredients such as berries or mud to get different color tones died off. Never the less, the ability to paint one's environment with ease certainly helped the artist get closer to nature.
