By Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres.
Circa.
Neo-Classicism.
Along with David, Ingres was one of the major forces behind Neo-classic art. He was also a strong opponent of the Romantic movement of the early 19th century as he believed that Romantic art was in poor taste and strayed too far from classical Greek and Renaissance art. So great was his hatred of Romanticism, that Ingres disowned his most famous student, Theodore Chassériau for painting in the style. Ironically, most people today have grouped Ingres's work into Romantic artwork as the two styles are very similar by today's standards.
