High Italian Renaissance

Before the invention of oil paints, all paintings were done as frescos such as The last Supper. Fresco paintings are paintings made with plaster, originating as long ago as the Egyptian culture. One of the problems with frescos is that the paintings often required hundreds upon hundreds of layers in order to get darker hues of colors to appear. Never the less, fresco painting is still a popular painting procedure and has been employed by modern artist such as Diego Rivera.
