Cronus devouring one of his Children
By Francisco Goya (1746-1828)
Circa. 1820's
Romanticism

"Cronus devouring one of his Children" is the most famous of Goya's black paintings and one of the most controversial mythological paintings of all times. Unlike most paintings of Cronus, here we see the god gruesomely eating his child, looking more animal than man. This had never been done up to this point as mythology paintings were suppose to be routed in the Greek idealism, even an act as gross as what is being depicted here. There is nothing beautiful in this painting which is why it is so amazing.
