May I have one too?
By Emile Munier (1840-1895)
Circa 1874
French Academic painting

Munier was a French realism painter who studied under the artist William Bouguereau. Like Bouguereau, his paintings are often characterized as being hyper-realistic yet overly sentimental and cute. During the late 1800's, there was a wide market for these types of paintings, especially for the upper class. Because of this, artists such as Bouguereau and Munier were the ones who made money and became popular in their day in contrast to the impressionist artists of Paris who shaped the art world, but were never as financially successful.

Though their style and subject matter has fallen out of favor with everyone outside of the art renewal center, these artist pioneered the styles, composition and colors used by many popular fantasy/comic book painters such as the late Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo and Julie Belle.

On a side note, to all you artists, remember that it is the people who step outside of popular taste that change the world.
