It's very odd, having a character tell a story within a story. It's kind of strange to force them to tell it, rather than me, because I have to write very differently. Anyway, the spell circle here is supposed to be unfinished. Ashen is carving it out in the sand with his old staff, the one left behind after the explosion in the other town. Keep in mind, this takes place a while before Ashen and Kess meet in the market later, and they don't know each other now, either.
