The critter I originally based this on is a "local" omen-type creature known (translated) as the "nightraven". The stories go that it's the soulf of a criminal buried in unholy ground, often by a crossroad, with a stake through one arm or shoulder to keep him down. He'd return nightly as a bird with a hole throug one wing and had to fly to Jerusalem (or some other holy city, I'm afraid I can't quite remember the correct one) before dawn. If he failed he'd have to start over the next night, also, some says nightraven would make a sound lyke a crying child. If you happened to look throug the hole in the wing you'd go mad, die or (very rarely) gain the ability to see spirits. I think you'd have to see the full moon through the hole for the last to happen, but again, I'm not sure. I'm doing this from memory.
So, not really a nice critter to run into, but you could do worse. There were omens out there that meant death if you saw them, with this one you at least had a chance.
