Jonathons surname is s number, why you ask?  His mother is a slave and that is her designation.  Luckily for him his father wasn't a slave, so neither is he.  The number surname does mark him as a second class citizen though, well more like subhuman but better than a slave.
The Antini empire has ranks of nobility and below that are free men, then those born of slaves and finally the slaves themselves.
