RANT OF THE DAY
———————

Watched some war movies lately… I'm a big fan of them and I thought of joining the military life at one point of my life. However, after experiencing it firsthand (the compulsory army training in the Philippines), I saw that it can be brutal and humiliating (details maybe in another rant). However, my fascination with military stuff didnt go away.

Anyway, the movies I saw lately:
- Taegukgi (Korean War, Korean, English Subtitles)
- Flags of our Fathers (WW2, USA, English)
- Mistah (On-going Islamic Insurgency in the Southern Philippines, Filipino, subbing it recommended!!!)

Anyway of all these 3, I liked the Taegukgi one the best. Its the only war movie that somewhat gave me misty eyes watching it. lol maybe because of the ENORMOUS amount of drama involved in it… as well as the always emphasized themes of brotherhood and reunification. Maybe it struck something in me since my brother is the closest person to me in this world. And I couldnt imagine being in a war fighting him on opposite sides of the battlefield (except playing Starcraft… lol I get pwnd. :( )

"Flags of our Fathers" was more on the political side of things. You know… people obsessed with making money during the war and forcing these supposed "heroes" to re-enact putting up the flag on Iwo Jima in order to forward the USA propaganda machine and sell "war bonds". Anti-war in other words. If you wanna watch this movie expecting the big big battle scenes and all the blood, guts, and gore that is common in war movies, you will be totally disappointed.

As for "Mistah", the title I'm not sure if the word mistah comes from a southern Filipino dialect that I'm unfamiliar with (The Philippines has over 100 dialects). The movie has non-stop action from start to end… and is unbiased (in my opinion). It doesnt portray the muslim rebels as bloodthirsty savages. In fact, it portrays them as honorable warriors who are strict with the teachings of the Koran. It even showed high-ranking Muslim rebels execute some of their underlings for raping a woman and torturing a captured soldier to death. As raping and torturing is "un-Islamic".

My Ratings:

Taegukgi - * * * * *
Flags of our Fathers - * * *
Mistah - * * * *
