The secret passageway is a classic. Whether it's in Scooby-Doo! (or its varied and colourful imitators), Batman's Wayne Manor, a dungeon in the Legend of Zelda games, or even Hogwarts Castle from the Harry Potter series, you can bet for sure that if a locale is big, old, and spooky enough, it's probably got a few secrets hidden away. What's quite interesting to me is that, much like many hallmarks in fiction, it's built on a strong foundation in our world. New York City's 21 Club featured a moving wall panel to conceal its liquor supplies during the Prohibition era, stately Victorian manor houses often had hidden passages utilised by the serving staff so they could move around without bothering their employers, secret tunnels were utilised by Marie Antoinette to escape a mob of demonstrators storming the Bastille and by Pope Clement VIII during the Sack of Rome, and numerous traditional houses and cathedrals might contain emergency exits which aren't apparent to the naked eye in order for the residents to evade persecution, fortified panic rooms, and on a much more sinister note, places where treasure or undesirables could be sequestered away. Sometimes these secrets develop with time and remodelling, with the space between new and old walls being left sufficiently wide enough to move around in. I love a good secret passage, me! It's an adventure in itself!
