Scott D on…and with that, the deputy has a face! Also, we now have context for some of that rather foreboding dialogue all the way back on page #1! Ha! I hope nobody thinks I'm grandstanding by describing my own work in such flattering terms.
One thing I had fun with when we were putting together the look and feel of Barkham was that sense of time displacement, something strange and separate from the rest of the world. Familiar, yet alien. Here, we see a small glimpse of that in the form of some very old technology (at least relative to today's standards) being put to use by the good ol' Sheriff. Big, hefty computer monitors with cables in the back as thick as your arm, probably with black screens and that little green text, boxy office telephones and intercoms, and I'll just bet there's a warm, grainy filter over the lens. We'll see more of that the longer we spend time in our little mountain town.
On a slightly more serious note, the name of the hotel mentioned in today's third panel references the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, a London-based animal shelter that has been rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming animals in need since 1860. The staff there absolutely dedicate themselves to helping hundreds of animals every single year, and I can't praise them enough for the good work they do, so please show them some support if you're able, and if you're reading this in the U.K. and looking to bring a new companion into your life, give them a ring.
