I like to think that in a world populated by dogs, a good scratch behind the ears is equivalent to a pat on the back. What other dog habits do you think might translate this way?

In a previous page, the Sheriff was reading a canine version of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, suggesting a down-to-earth and straightforward approach to life, a capacity for social perceptiveness and understanding of the relation and differences between the spirit and the letter of the law, and a sympathetic regard for those around him. Maybe it means that Howie does his duty as an officer of the law without question, cultivating trust and promoting ethical consistency and clarity, with an uncomplicated view of right and wrong, but also respectfully considers the unfortunate and sometimes overwhelming events which can drive good dogs to do bad things.

This time, the role of Virginia Woolf is taken by her dog Pinka, and Adrienne is reading a sort-of version of Woolf's Flush: A Biography. What do you think Adrienne's taste in literature says about her?
