The page lay-out represents Belle getting fancy with the direction using fades, close-ups and a montage. Mary Anne is trying to hold on to herself by trading quips with the Grey Gal's monologue. How many times have we done that in a boring meeting or class? Just riffing on it in our head or doodling raucous cartoons.

If you've ever seen my drawn work I don't like panels letting the page flow stream of consciousness. I relate everything to film so a panel is a cut and no panels is maybe a fade or a pan or even a montage.

Today's fun fact: in 1930's Hollywood, Russian montage took film by storm. So Hollywood imported a collection of Russian film editors and set up separate montage departments because regular directors and editors just didn't or couldn't. Before the Hayes code a few montages were quite explicit.
