Being totally unarmed was once a realistic option taken in areas infested with pirates. You let them take whatever they wanted if they let you go. Many a poor ship got away with it and that's what this salvage crew does. They have nothing worth taking so they're left alone. And as Astra says no matter how well armed you are, you won't win most fights.

But she's not mentioning that the whole crew is skilled in hand-to-hand combat. Someone wants to take the crew, they'll find them very hard to keep.

These are not necessarily Aordians by birth. There are numerous human inhabited worlds not in the republic as set out in Tales of S.I.G..
