I've heard that they apparently fixed this in 4th Edition, but in 3.5 Edition Dungeons and Dragons, a Fighter will start out stronger than a Wizard, and although they both get stronger with each level, eventually the Wizard will surpass the Fighter. This is even worse if you replace the Wizard with a Cleric or Druid, which can wear decent armor and are good melee fighters as well as powerful casters.
