Amphieb:
I think he had a lark. He will let us go.
It's undenyable that comics contributed much to the acceptance of costumed vigilants, but right now I see it on myself: to perform the cliché I should have to say something stupid like:
"You see, he endangered us all with his carelessness. One like him isn't meant for you."

Now THAT'S a villain - killing the hero unannounced, cold-blooded and just for his own fun. Casual cruelty, somehow.
