In education, electives are offered as an essential part of school curriculum. Freely selected courses with the purpose of well-rounding a student's learning experience, electives are intended for enrichment to expand the mind and serve as catalysts for dynamic learning while satisfying personal interests.
Typically, electives revolve around skill or vocational foundations like industrial technology (computers, wood/metal shop) or consumer/family sciences (home econ.). Additionally, electives in the creative, performance and fine arts, or highly academic courses such as foreign languages or journalism also serve as standard elective offerings in secondary and higher education.
