I got into Bionicle pretty much at the ground floor- July 2001. In retrospect, I started to fall behind by the end of 2002, but it took me til the Toa Metru (2004?) to really realize it. Bionicle had changed from a riff on Polynesian mythology in a Gnostic world to.. something else that didn't really interest me at all.

But those first two years were powerful. So here's the ground rules: everything up to the confrontation with the Bahrag is pretty much cannon- that's the MNOLG, the TakuaNewsFlashes and, sometimes, the first two comics series.
