This page depicts the spacecraft crashing into the moon's eye. The scene is, by a considerable margin, the most famous part of the film and it's inarguably one of the most iconic images in movie history. I certainly wanted to avoid screwing it up too badly when it came time for me to draw the comic.
Despite it not happening in the film, I wanted the moon to see the cylinder coming. I thought that this would serve as a good segue for the close-up that divides the page. Early on I decided that I wanted to draw the cylinder "exploding" from the confines of panel borders in a manner comparable to late-60's Neal Adams.
As any casual observer can attest, the final panel on this page is closely modeled after a screenshot from the film.
