The interesting challenge here was making the designs of these monster LESS goofy-looking than their original poorly drawn appearance! (Hey, I was drawing with a roller mouse and photoshop!)
I mean, they are still a bit on the goofy side, but I was going more for a comedy angle about how pathetic Zeno was. On the web-version, I covered this story in a crossover with DD's own Elijah and Azuu!
But given the nature of ReVamped, both the crossovers I did with Inkmonkey and that fella known as Evil Emperor Nick (and also my own "Mystery Friends" Scooby-Doo parody which was non-canon anyway!) are the only things that are not really going to be redone. It's not fair to drag Inkmonkey away from what he's doing to un-retire his comic and redraw his side, and linking to his old art would be unfair as well. (And especially 'cuz I was a starstruck nerd who was just excited to be doing a crossover with awesome cool people, I kinda let them both take the lead and a lot of things don't gel with the cosmology I have set up in this comic!) It was fun, but I gotta do what's best for the story.
However, I don't consider this a retcon per se because I edged in some of the original story even then. Longtime readers who remember the crossovers will recognize those elements when they arise, like here. Different events, same outcome!
Though I should probably also say, even though I'm going back to basics with the OLD story, it's not like I'm doing that super faithfully either. I've gotten arguably better as a writer since 2002! The basic thrust of it is the same, because continuity is super important to me, and I make tons of callbacks.
